Fisher House provides a “home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care, and volunteers are essential in creating a warm, welcoming environment for these families. GETTING STARTED
Starting as a volunteer at the Air Force & Space Force Fisher House is simple and rewarding. To join our team, volunteers first attend an orientation session, where they’ll learn about Fisher House’s mission, volunteer responsibilities, and the essential role they’ll play in supporting military families. Volunteers also complete necessary forms and any applicable screenings. Our orientation sessions are conveniently scheduled during evenings or weekends to accommodate busy schedules. WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
When: Weekly or as needed
- Clean and sanitize shared refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, ovens, and stovetops. Label food items and discard expired items.
When: Weekly
- Bring a homey touch by baking treats for guests. A small budget is available for ingredients.
Daily Cleaning and Organizing
When: Daily
- Help keep common areas tidy by vacuuming, dusting, and light organizing. Assist with receiving, sorting, and distributing donations.
Weekly Cleaning and Organizing
When: Weekly
- Sanitize toys, dust bookshelves, and clean exercise equipment. Clear browsing history on business computers and restock office supplies as needed.
When: Holidays, seasonal changes, and special events
- Create a festive atmosphere by decorating room doors and common areas. Ensure decorations are taken down and stored promptly. A small budget is available for supplies.
When: As needed
- Ensure the flag is raised and lowered according to notifications.
When: 8 AM – 4 PM, Monday through Friday
- Provide a supportive presence for guests and assist with requests. Most responsibilities involve engaging with guests and reporting any concerns.
Guest Services at Fisher House 2 -JBSA
When: 9 AM – 1 PM and 1 PM – 4 PM, Monday through Friday
- Welcome guests, assist with supplies and maintain a supportive presence. Handle light administrative and cleaning tasks as needed.
When: Weekly or seasonally
- Clean the BBQ grill, check gas levels, and refill tanks if needed.
When: Weekly or as needed
- Track grocery needs, shop for supplies, and help label and store food items appropriately.
When: 12-15 days per month, 5:30-8:00 PM
- Welcome meal providers, greet families, help serve, and assist with cleanup and leftover storage.
When: Seasonally as needed
- Assist with weeding, planting, watering, and litter pickup around the grounds. Volunteers who acquire gardening supplies are also welcome.
When: Weekly
- Maintain cleanliness in the laundry area, restock toiletries, and wash, dry, fold, and organize kitchen towels.
When: Tuesdays and Fridays
- Collect and sort mail and donations from the hospital, ensuring appropriate donations and checking expiration dates. Organize items into the pantry, donation closet, or thrift store box.
When: As needed
- Assist with tasks like changing light bulbs, handling daily chores, and offering administrative help.
When: As needed
- Offer pet sitting or transportation to the airport or doctor’s office for guests. We maintain a list of all volunteers available for these services.
