Who’s Eligible? Ensuring Support for Those Who Need It Most

Air Force and Space Force Fisher Houses are honored to provide a comforting home-away-from-home for active duty, retired military members, veterans, and their families from all branches of service. To be eligible, the family must be traveling a minimum of 40 miles one way, without local lodging options, while the patient receives medical care.

In times of urgent medical need, we understand how difficult it can be to wait. For this reason, admission is not always based on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, we consider several important factors:

  • Medical Condition: Terminal, critical, or serious cases are given priority.
  • Financial Need: Junior personnel may receive priority.
  • Service Status: Active duty families are prioritized.

Once a family’s eligibility and availability are confirmed, the Fisher House staff will contact them when a room is ready. Each family will be assigned one guest room and one parking space. If necessary, families can be admitted after business hours with prior arrangements, and in emergency situations, walk-ins may be accommodated by contacting the specific Fisher House Manager. Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for families during challenging times.

Referral Required: Your First Step to a Stay at Fisher House

To stay at an Air Force or Space Force Fisher House, a referral is required to ensure we can best support families during their time of need. Referrals can be prepared by trusted professionals such as physicians, nurses, chaplains, social workers, the American Red Cross, case managers, or patient administration.

While an advance referral form may be submitted before the family’s arrival to help facilitate the process, please note that it does not guarantee room availability. We will do everything possible to provide a comfortable and welcoming stay for families during these challenging times.
