Our Story

af

The Air Force Services Center oversees the Services and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) elements of Force Support Squadrons (FSS) worldwide. These squadrons provide combat support and community service by delivering mission-sustaining quality of life services.

FSS enhances the quality of life for service members, DoD civilians, retirees, and their families with recreational activities like golf, bowling, arts and crafts, outdoor recreation, and special events.  FSS also provides childcare, youth programs and other services that enhance the quality of life for our patrons. When deployed, our FSS Services Airmen and Guardians feed troops, manage tent cities, operate field exchanges, operate mortuary services, and provide fitness and morale activities.

How We Are Funded

FSS functions and activities are funded in different ways. Some programs are funded by Nonappropriated funds generated through sales at on base activities like golf courses, bowling centers and clubs. Every dollar our patrons spent at their  local base recreational facilities is reinvested back into those programs. Other programs are funded with taxpayer dollars called appropriated funds. Some programs use a combination of funds, depending on how they support the Air Force mission.

Our History

The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center (AFIMSC), with headquarters at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, is one of six specialized centers assigned to Air Force Materiel Command.

In 1991 the Directorate of MWR operations came out from under AFPC to be the Air Force Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Center.  Over the course two years Air Force MWR merged with the Services function to become HQ Air Force MWR and Services Agency. 1994 changed our name to Services, by merging two great squadrons, Mission and Services to become Force Support Squadron (FSS). In 2012 the Air Force Personnel Center, Air Force Services Agency and the Air Force Manpower Agency merged to become the new Air Force Personnel Center. The Air Force Services Agency was inactivated and established as the Services Directorate as part of Air Force Personnel Center. In 2014 the Air Force Services Directorate aligned under Air Force Material Command (AFMC) and on 1 OCT 2015 Services became a Primary Support Unit under Air Force Installation & Mission Support Center AFIMSC.
